Female Puberty
What is the best thing about being a girl? When I posed this question to my students over the years, I never received as many responses as I would have wished… It’s so important that girls understand the changes they are experiencing, inside and out, and that they learn to embrace them.
On a personal note…
At this strangest of times, I was presented with an opportunity that I treasured. A group of parents reached out to inquire about hiring PforPP for their children (my former students). For children, adaptable as they may be, this is a very unnatural situation: The same children who never stopped chatting in class were strangely quiet. We can continue to pray for a safe resolution to this public health crisis so that our most precious children will be able to resume the lives they know- days spent with their peers and the teachers who love them.
Male Puberty
This week’s post pulls no punches: This is the no-nonsense, information-packed post that every parent should read! Remember, even if you have only girls it is important that all children are aware of what is going on with both their own and the opposite sex.
Primer on Hormones
As we begin the study of male and female puberty, a little primer on the topic of hormones is in order.
Teaching Family Life at Home
Unbelievably, you find yourself teaching at home. While math, language arts, and science are important, so too is the continuation of health studies. This may seem difficult, but NEVER FEAR! You can do this and we are here to assist. Remember - your child did not meet his or her first teacher in Pre-K or even kindergarten. You were their first and best teacher and you still hold that position.
Hygiene: You Don't Want To Be The Kid Who Smells
In my years as a school nurse, I had many instances of a teacher coming to me to ask my assistance with a student who had a hygiene issue. Often it was noticeable body odor, but greasy hair and bad breath were also problems. While most of the students referenced were fifth graders, there were also third and fourth graders. Depending on your child’s growth, size and age of puberty, these problems can arise earlier than you might anticipate.
CHOCOLATE CHUNK TOFFEE WALNUT COOKIES
OK Mrs. Coates, just put down the cookies and walk away slowly.
Schools are closed and we are all trying to stay positive at this difficult time. One thing that cheers me is baking something yummy! Aside from fearlessness in the health classroom, my one claim to local fame has been my cookies. Below is my ultimate recipe and some tips that I have found useful. Have fun and enjoy!
Girls and Boys... What is happening?
Autumn leaves, a baby’s diaper, dirty socks, coins, nail polish color, your mind, a caterpillar, the seasons, and the one that I thought was the give-away (it wasn’t), a chameleon’s color. I asked all of the students to find the one word that connected all of the cards. The answer is the beginning of our trip through puberty: We are all changing.
